Are you considering selecting, changing, or altering your career path into dental assisting? This blog is designed to help you determine if going through a dental assisting program is right for you! Let’s start from the beginning.
Firstly, let’s discuss the clinical responsibilities of a dental assistant in Indiana and see if it matches your personality type.
Are you up to these tasks?
Dental assistants are well rounded and patient care is of the utmost importance. You will also assist the doctor for procedures by suctioning and passing instruments. Another aspect of the job is ensuring instruments are prepared and sterilized properly. Dental assistants perform X-Rays safely and accurately. A good dental assistant will keep a detailed record of patients oral health history to ensure proper care is provided.
Okay, you’re liking what you’ve just read. You can see yourself performing all of these tasks and they interest you! Yay!
Let’s take this evaluation a little further – personality traits
Aside from the tasks listed above, dental assistants need to have certain personality traits to really go above and beyond the call of duty.
Are you empathetic?
Dental assistants need to be empathetic – as you can imagine, most people don’t particularly enjoy going to the dentist. It’s important that you make them feel comfortable and at ease. Plus, you will meet so many people and establish patient relationships that could last a lifetime! Quality patient care can tremendously set your office apart from others.
Are you flexible?
Dental assistants need to be flexible. Schedules change, people cancel, and emergencies happen. It’s a part of life! If you are the type of person who gets easily flustered when something doesn’t go according to plan, working in a fast-paced general office may not be for you. But good news…if you go into a specialty practice, such as endodontics, you will be doing the same procedure all day! No changes! Dentistry has all different types of avenues that you can venture into.
Are you organized?
Dental assistants MUST be organized! We have so many different instruments, materials, and small objects to keep track of – good organization ensures a fast, efficient, clean dental office. As a dental assistant, you will need to keep operatory rooms and the sterilization/lab area clean and organized.
